SMARTPACK P-OTN Applications

Since Packet Optical Transport Networks (P-OTN) is still an area under definition, SMARTPACK P-OTN is designed to accommodate various system architectures. By combining critical modules with different levels of integration combined with FPGA customizability, a solution can be found, which meets exactly your system needs.

Packet Optical Transport Networks (P-OTN) promise flexibility in how packet and TDM traffic is switched and transported in the network. From a single system, Carrier Ethernet, SONET/SDH and OTN switching and interfaces can be provided. This allows carriers to choose at what level to switch traffic (wavelength, sub-wavelength or at lower Ethernet speed-rates).

Various P-OTN system design and architectures have already been developed, each with its unique approach. This is expected to be the case for some time.

SMARTPACK P-OTN was designed with this situation in mind. By defining a family of solutions around key functional modules that can be combined and integrated in various ways, SMARTPACK P-OTN can accommodate a variety of applications and system architectures.

Since SMARTPACK P-OTN solutions are FPGA based, each reference solution can be adapted and customized to meet individual system requirements. It is also possible to define an alternative combination of modules to fit exactly a given system architecture.

As can be seen, various combinations are possible. Single module devices can be combined for a more discrete linecard design, while more integrated solutions can be used for compact, low power, yet powerful linecard implementations.

Stand alone solutions can be supported, but also linecard solutions based on various backplane implementations. This includes packet, TDM and universal backplanes capable of handling both TDM and packet.

A key module in all of the solutions is OTN. This is provided with both standard and enhanced FEC allowing optimal transmission characteristics. Both packet and SONET/SDH clients can be mapped into OTN for transport. OTN crossconnect functionaliy can also be provided allowing a highly flexible switching solution.

All of the above solutions are refernces open to customization and adaptation by customers. If you require a different configuration, contact TPACK to find out how we can help you.
