This results in a better equipment density and improved CAPEX (CAPital EXpenditure) and OPEX (OPerational EXpenditure) compared with traditional plug-in modules with dedicated fixed interfaces.

TPACK extends this flexibility with the introduction of linecards with configurable SoftPort interfaces, where the interface signal format can be modified, for example from SDH/SONET to Ethernet or OTN. But this is just the first step. Universal Linecards offer an enhanced level of flexibility, where not only interfaces types but also module functionality can be configured to fit the right application.
