Reliable Mobile Backhaul Packet Transport using PBB-TE and T-MPLS

Mobile data services are expected to be a significant revenue generator for mobile operators in the future. However, when this will happen and to what extent is unknown. This presents mobile operators with a dilemma: how to prepare for an uncertain future while securing existing voice and SMS services?

Current proposed solutions advocate replacement of the SONET/SDH Radio Access Transport Network with packet transport based on pseudowires and circuit emulation services. However, there is a concern that connection-less packet networks might not be capable of providing the quality and reliability necessary to support voice services.

An alternative approach can be based on connectionoriented packet technologies such as Provider Backbone Bridge - Traffic Engineered (PBB-TE) and Transport MPLS (T-MPLS). These technologies provide traffic engineered tunnels for packet transport that are protected on an end-to-end basis with extensive OAM features.

The main advantage of these technologies is that they resemble existing SONET/SDH networks in behavior and operation making the transition from existing networks easier and ensuring that the same levels of quality and reliability are retained.
