The Transformation Continues
The debate about whether carriers still need a transport network to support NGN applications is receding, to be replaced by “what type of transport network is best suited for the new packet world?” The question is no longer “why do I need transport?” but “what transport do I need?”
Backed by the IETF, MPLS is currently being adapted to meet transport network requirements defined by the ITU-T. The result of this collaboration, MPLS-TP (MPLS Transport Profile), may yet meet carriers needs for reduced cost packet networking and provide a route for future network evolution.
In this paper, TPACK addresses the evolution of the “P-OTN” or Packet Optical Transport Network market.
