Easing Mobile Backhaul Migration

In expectation of increased use of mobile data services in the future, mobile operators are currently planning to migrate their mobile network infrastructure to a fully packet based network. Mobile backhaul is a particular area of focus, as it accounts for up to 40% of total operational cost.

Ethernet is increasingly being used as a backhaul solution with more than 15% share of installations in 2007. However, more than 70% of mobile backhaul connections are based on PDH, either over copper or microwave. This situation is also likely to prevail. It is therefore important that these connections are utilized effectively to reduce the bandwidth requirements per base station.

Protocols do exist for transport of packet data over multiple PDH connections, such as ATM IMA and ML-PPP. But, a new solution referred to as Ethernet over Next Generation PDH (NG-PDH) is attracting the interest of several service providers and equipment vendors.
