New P-OTN whitepaper and solutions
In this second issue of TPACK's newsletter we provide a new whitepaper on Packet Optical Transport Networks (P-OTN), a new transport concept that merges packet and optical technology. TPACK provides a number of solutions addressing P-OTN, which are detailed below. We also provide an overview of various packet technologies currently under development including PBB-TE, T-MPLS, MPLS-TP, VPLS, PBB and PLSB with particular emphasis on multipoint applications. P-OTN: Packet Optical Network Transformation
Packet Optical Transport Networks (P-OTN) is a new class of transport network that is equally comfortable in handling both packet and TDM traffic. The essential elements of P-OTN are:
- ROADM based WDM as physical transport
- Optical Transport Network (OTN) for wavelength management
- SONET/SDH support for legacy compatibility
- Connection Oriented Ethernet (COE) support
In "P-OTN: Packet Optical Network Transformation", TPACK provides an overview of P-OTN and the motivations behind this concept as well as application examples. The whitepaper also includes an overview of OTN. Get your copy.

Introducing the SMARTPACK TPOX3203 20 Gbps Packet Optical Engine: integrated Packet Optical Switch Mapper
The TPOX3203 provides the first chip to integrate an OTN OTU-2 packet mapper with a complete Carrier Packet Switch and Traffic Manager. The solution provides the same funcitionalty available in the TPX3103 Carrier Packet Engine supporting PBB-TE, T-MPLS, PWE3 and VPLS including hardware based OAM and protection switching. The OTN implementation includes standard and enhanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) support.
This makes the TPOX3203 ideal for P-OTN transponder and muxponder applications in existing MSPP, Carrier Ethernet Switch and WDM platform applications.

Announcing the SMARTPACK TPOX4214 40 Gbps Packet Optical Engine: integrated P-OTN chip solution
The TPOX4214 exapnds the functionality provided with the TPOX3203 to include SONET/SDH support, an integrated ODU-1 crossconnect and an extra OTN OTU-2 interface. The TPOX4214 thus provides a complete integrated P-OTN chip solution making it ideal for stand-alone P-OTN applications whether they be linecard or pizzabox implementations.
