SMARTPACK NG-SONET/SDH provides a range of solutions for transport of packet data over NG-SONET/SDH from 155 Mbps (STS-3/STM-1 SONET/SDH) to 10 Gbps (STS-192/STM-64 SONET/SDH)

SMARTPACK NG-SONET/SDH is a SMARTPACK Solution designed for efficient transport of various packet data over SONET/SDH using ITU-T standards Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS), referred to as NG-SONET/SDH.

SMARTPACK NG-SONET/SDH solutions are based on a combination of SMARTPACK Products:

• Carrier Packet Engines (from 3 Gbps to 20/40 Gbps switching capacity)
• Packet Mappers (from 155 Mbps to 10 Gbps SONET/SDH)
• Carrier Packet Mapper Engines (10 Gbps SONET/SDH)

Carrier Packet Engines combine packet processing and traffic management in a single chip solution allowing efficient switching and forwarding of various packet data protocols, such as IP, MPLS, VPLS, PWE3 and Ethernet. Carrier Packet Engines can also support PBT/PBB-TE and T-MPLS should these be relevant.

Packet Mappers provide full implementations of NG-SONET/SDH standards providing both low-order and high-order VCAT support (i.e. the ability to concatenate low-rate SONET/SDH containers to flexibly and efficiently support as wide a range of data rates as possible). Legacy protocols, such as PPP, LAPS and CCAT are also supported as standard.

Carrier Packet Mapper Engines combine the functionality of Carrier Packet Engines and Packet Mappers in a single chip solution. They provide the full feature sets of packet processing, traffic management and packet mapping necessary for a cost optimized Ethernet/MPLS over NG-SONET/SDH solution capable of supporting all MEF defined Carrier Ethernet services.

High-level Driver with API software is provided in both binary and source code to ease integration. The software provides easy to use API interfaces providing an intuitive abstraction from the FPGA design complexities. The software also implements a wide range of forwarding plane functionality in support of NG-SONET/SDH providing complete control of the data plane.

• 2.5 Gbps NG-SONET/SDH - based on TPX2530 13 Gbps Carrier Packet Engine and TPW48-S 2.5 Gbps Packet Mapper 
• 10 Gbps NG-SONET/SDH - based on TPX3000 20/40 Gbps Carrier Packet Engine and TPW192-S 10 Gbps Packet Mapper 
• Cost optimized 10 Gbps NG-SONET/SDH - based on TPWX3192 Carrier Packet Mapper Engine

By using SMARTPACK NG-SONET/SDH solutions, Telecom Equipment Vendors can quickly and easily add packet data support to SONET/SDH Add Drop Multiplexers (ADM) and Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP).
